41-Year-Old Woman Fatally Struck in Hit-and-Run Collision on Mill Avenue

TEMPE, AZ (April 12, 2022) – Friday night, 40-year-old Raul Meza Portillo was arrested after fatally striking a bicyclist on Baseline Road.

Police responded to the scene near the intersection of Mill Avenue and Baseline Road, around 7:30 p.m.

According to reports, Portillo was making a left turn from northbound Mill Avenue to westbound Baseline Road when he struck the woman on a bicycle. Upon impact, Portillo fled the scene without rendering aid to the woman.

Investigators say the 41-year-old bicyclist was within a marked crosswalk at the time of the crash. Upon arrival, crews determined that the suspect driver dragged the woman for several hundred feet.

Due to the extent of injuries sustained, medics pronounced the female pedestrian dead at the scene. Although, authorities have not yet released her identity.

Police later located and arrested Portillo at his home around 1:00 a.m. Per reports, he admitted to drinking alcohol before. As a result, he was taken into Tempe City Jail, where he now faces charges second degree murder, and hit-and-run resulting in death.
