After a recent and very quiet soft-opening, new gastropub Rascal officially opens tonight on La Brea Avenue. The owners are former Chaya beverage director Sandy Clark and his wife, Rebecca, who was once GM at Trumps, a popular L.A. restaurant in the 1980s.

The chef is Michael Bartley, whose definition of gastropub apparently runs to grilled sandwiches (one of which is a burger, naturally), pressed sandwiches and house-made tater tots.

The beer list is small, with only three taps (Napa Smith Pilsner, Allagash White, Green Flash IPA) and six to eight bottled craft beers. So is the wine list: five whites and four reds.

With the recent opening of 320 South Wine Lounge and German beer l-centric Wirtshaus, both on La Brea, Rascal faces some serious intra-neighborhood competition.

Rascal: 801 S. La Brea Ave., LA. (323) 933-3229.
