On April 7th, 2023, history was made as Lazarus became the first recording artist to debut a song from outer space on the International Space Station. This event took place on a livestream broadcast alongside 42-year Chief Scientist at NASA Dr. James Green, Matavisionaries CEO Wasim Ahmed and Spaceomix CEO Joseph Borg. The song had been installed into a cube device created by Spaceomix and Ice Cubes Technologies which was launched into space and placed in the ISS 3 weeks prior to the song’s premiere via astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi.
Lazarus aka Dr. Khan was particularly chosen for this historical event because he has been the pioneer of merging Hip Hop with Science and Medicine as he is also a practicing physician on top of being a top tier Hip Hop lyricist. His latest song “Pale Blue Dot” comes off as a love letter to space and astronomy. It realistically depicts the physics of space launch, captures the essence of discovering space, and offers a reflection about mankind from the perspective of space. It is a song that pays homage to the late astronomer Carl Sagan who had eloquently described the Earth as a “pale blue dot” from the view of the Voyager 1 some 3.7 billion miles (about 5954572800 km) away from the sun and this song is a retelling of it for the current generation.
Lazarus has created a milestone moment for Hip Hop in its 50th year and this is a grand achievement for music as a whole. Now that the song has officially premiered from space, it is set to be released on all streaming platforms on April 21st for everyone to be able to hear it.
