Google alerts can be a wonderful thing, and this morning it delivered Cardinal Roger Mahony's post-Prop. 8 spin a few days after November 4. As the Catholic leader of the Los Angeles Archdiocese, Mahony sent out his official take on the Proposition 8 victory to parishes throughout L.A. County.
Cardinal Mahony: Praise the Lord and pass the Dramamine
Around this time, gays and lesbians were fuming over the Mormon church's role in the passing of Prop. 8, but, Mahony clearly takes some pride in the Catholic role of taking away the existing right of gays and lesbians around the world to legally marry in California.
This excerpt was found on the blog of the Blessed Sacrament Parish on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.
Notice that “gay” or “homosexual” is never mentioned, only “group.”
Also notice the word “choice,” a buzz word for any gay or lesbian who
knows down to his or her bones that “choice” has nothing to do with
sexual orientation.
“Proposition 8 is not against any group in
our society,” Mahony writes. “Its sole focus is on preserving God's
plan for people living upon on this earth throughout time. The Catholic
Church understands that there are people who choose to live together in
relationships other than traditional marriage. All of their spiritiual,
pastoral, and civil rights should be respected, together with their
membership in the Church.”
It's the kind of spin that, yes, is dizzying.
