Apple, the company that created the iPod and the iPhone, has given $100,000 to the No on 8 campaign, Andrew Sullivan at the Daily Dish reports. Apple very publicly stated its position on its start page today, which may make a whole bunch of gay men wear their iPods in the gym with a little more pride these days.

“Apple is publicly opposing Proposition 8 and making a donation of $100,000 to the No on 8 campaign,” the company writes. “Apple was among the first California companies to offer equal rights and benefits to our employees' same-sex partners, and we strongly believe that a person's fundamental rights — including the right to marry — should not be affected by their sexual orientation. Apple views this as a civil rights issue, rather than just a political issue, and is therefore speaking out publicly against Proposition 8.”

The No on 8 campaign, which wants to defeat Proposition 8, the ballot measure that would ban same sex marriage in California, has been raising money fast and furiously over the past couple of weeks. The check from Apple will no doubt help the effort to catch or even surpass the Yes on 8 campaign in total contributions.

This week, L.A. Weekly runs a feature story, “Riding the Culture Divide with Proposition 8,” about the national implications of the November 4 ballot measure.
