Pussy Riot at the El Rey: With everything that’s going on in the world, could there be a more important voice than that of the collective Pussy Riot? There may have been some arguments over who gets to use the name and for what purpose, but the activist punks are unlikely to be short of a word or two at the El Rey.

Last Friday, August 5, Pussy Riot, led by Nadya Tolokonikova, released the EP Matriachy on Neon Gold Records. The EP includes the single “Princess Charming,” featuring Salem Ilese.

According to the press release, “The release comes just before the 10-year “anniversary” of their August 17, 2012 verdict of being convicted with hooliganism motivated by religious hatred, and spending 2 years in jail for protesting Putin… The mixtape features collaborations with Tove Lo (who executive produced the project), Salem Ilese, Kito, Hudson Mohawke, Slayyyter, ILOVEMAKONNEN, Big Freedia, REI AMI, Phoebe Ryan and more. Last month, Pussy Riot announced the project with “PLASTIC” featuring ILOVEMAKONNENalongside the official music video, directed by Haley Bowman.”

“‘PLASTIC’ and the mixtape follows Pussy Riot‘s latest political action last June 9th, in which they hung a 45 foot MATRIARCHY NOW banner from the third floor of the Texas State Capitol to protest the national attack on reproductive rights. Plus Nadya Tolokonnikova has played an instrumental role in setting up LegalAbortion.ETH – the frictionless Web3 donation address that benefits seven organizations protecting reproductive rights.”

According to the El Rey’s website, Sarah Silverman is also performing, as well as REI AMI. That’s an amazing bill.

Pussy Riot at the El Rey: The event takes place at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 10 at the El Rey Theatre.
