A public wake and memorial have been planned to honor former Garfield High School mathematics teacher Jaime Escalante, according to a Thursday announcement made by the actor who portrayed him in Stand And Deliver, Edward James Olmos.

On April 16, a wake will be held in the classroom where Escalante famously molded inner-city Latino kids and helped them perform calculus at a college level. The room, Olmos states, will be decorated to look like it did in the 1980s, when Escalante plied his trade there.

On April 17th there will be a nearly two-mile march from Garfield to the East Los Angeles College stadium, where an 11 a.m. memorial will take place. A private burial will follow.
