Prunk Rocks: Dutch producer and PIV label boss Prunk started DJing when he was about 15, which was about 18 years ago.

“As you might know, the EDM and Latin House movement was quite popular,” he says. “Especially in the Netherlands as we had a lot of superstars back then already. My friends and me were more into old skool deephouse back then. We started playing together at home and started doing small parties for 200 to 300 people. From this I got booked in some smaller clubs and beach parties. I’ve been playing as Prunk le Funk in the beginning (I think you can even find some tracks / videos on YouTube from that era haha). The last 10 years I have been DJing for a living. With a substantial growth in the last 4/5 years alongside the label.”

He describes his sound simply as house music.

“When I was younger I would go to parties wearing ‘True House Music’ t-shirts which I made myself,” he says. “I’ve been inspired by the Chicago and New York House music from the ’80s and ’90s. I play everything within the genre but mostly the nice, soulful, sexy and hip moving house records.”

Prunk started PIV Records just a couple of years after he started DJing.

“I would ask DJ’s who played at the party to release music on the label,” he says. “Fun fact is that I started with the name PIV as it’s VIP when you turn around. We always wanted to treat every visitor like a VIP – meaning we wouldn’t have big backstage areas and everyone could walk around and dance behind and next to the DJ.”

His latest release is the Le Funk album.

This album is a tribute to my entire music career,” he says. “My first DJ name was ‘Prunk Le Funk’ as I mentioned and mainly because I only played funky house in the early years. ‘Le Funk’ has been removed from my entire DJ name because I didn’t want to be connected to one genre. With this album I want to show that there is still enough ‘Funk’ in Prunk with a nod to the past. My album really had to be a house album and I wanted to do this with a warm soulful funky sound. I have tried to make this album with young and old talent. One of my dreams was to make a track with house legend Jovonn and I succeeded because he did the vocals of ‘Story of House.’ In the vocals he pays attention to how house originated with an important lesson for the new generation. In addition, I was also allowed to remix one of my favourite records of his called ‘Back in the Dark’, a classic together with DJ Deep, which can only be found on the vinyl of my album.”

“I also collaborated with another house legend Mr V,” he continues. “This track is a bit deeper with a warm disco bassline called ‘Friday Night’, of course with the vocals of the man himself. Besides these legends I have made music with the talented Ruze, Dennis Quin and M-High. All 3 had a great year musically last year and that’s why I think it’s great that they’re also on my album. I hope to not only appeal to DJs with my album, but also to house lovers because this album was made with a lot of love. I hope you enjoy it ‘for the love of house music’.”

Looking ahead, Prunk has plenty planned for 2o23.

“As every artist says… We have a lot of exciting stuff planned for 2023,” he says. “But we actually have some real cool stuff coming up. We just did our first PIV events in NYC and Miami. With PIV we are planning on doing more US showcases. We also just announced our second festival in Amsterdam, and we will return to countries such as Peru, Spain. For me one of the highlights will be my Los Angeles debut. On the 4th of February I will headline Sound Nightclub. And I will play Halcyon SF the night before. Next to this we have a lot of cool shows confirmed, going from London to Miami to Barcelona and more. Next to this we are looking forward to continuing our Ibiza residency with PIV next summer!”

Prunk Rocks: Prunk’s Le Funk album is our January 27 via PIV Records.
