A 26-year-old woman fatally shot as she sat in a car parked in a Westside neighborhood was not the intended target, according to television news reports. More than one station stated that the victim's husband was a gang member or affiliate who was likely the target.

Jana Collins and her four-month-old fetus died at nearby Kaiser Permanente West Los Angeles Medical Center after she was shot about 9:15 a.m. in the 1900 block of Corning Street in La Cienega Heights, according to police and news reports.

She was in the vehicle with her husband and three other companions, Los Angeles police Officer April Harding said. NBC4 reported the victim was a mother of two who worked at a nearby Starbucks and had recently gotten married. Collins was reportedly a resident of Santa Monica.

The community just a few miles south of Beverly Hills is claimed by an African-American gang, the Playboy Gangster Crips, and at least one neighbor speculated that the violence involved Latino-versus-black rivalries in the area.

The area has been shaken by violence in the past, including in the spring of 2008.
