In case you haven't heard, the exterior of the impressively renovated West Hollywood Library has a fresh coat of paint — courtesy of Shepard Fairey, Retna and Kenny Scharf. But with the opening of the Center for the Study of Political Graphics poster exhibition Decade of Dissent: Democracy in Action 1965-1975, the interior shows off its popular-art savvy, too. Part of Pacific Standard Time in general and the West Hollywood-centric PST campaign “It All Started Here” in particular, this group show does what CSPG does best — demonstrate the lively creativity, fearless progressivism and impact of socially aware activist artistry. The show offers powerful, funny and outrageous posters from CSPG's archives, which take a broad look at the spectrum of issues in play during that tumultuous decade as well as the present day, from gay rights to race and gender equality, immigration, voter protection, free speech and, of course, ending “the war.” Exhibition tours will be given at 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on opening day, and a slate of artist and activist panel discussions take place throughout the show's run, starting with a conversation with Robert Scheer and political cartoonist Mr. Fish on Feb. 13.
