A possible mass shooting was averted in San Diego today, authorities announced over the weekend.

But thanks to the quick-acting cops and, it would appear, an alert teacher, a 12-year-old was off the street and “numerous rifles and handguns” were seized from his home after San Diego sheriff's officials say an email threatened gunfire at …

… Twin Peaks Middle School in Poway.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department states it learned of the Friday night email Saturday morning:

The threat indicated that on Monday, February 11, 2013, 23 students and a Twin Peaks Middle School teacher would be shot. The email made reference to 3000 rounds of ammunition as well as numerous firearms.

At 5:30 p.m. Saturday deputies descended on the alleged, 12-year-old sender's home with a search warrant.

Several computers, along with numerous rifles and handguns, were seized from the residence. The student was taken into custody and was admitted to a local hospital for treatment and evaluation.

While the kid was not under arrest, cops noted that the email could constitute a felony terrorist threat and that his case would be evaluated by the San Diego County District Attorney's office.
