A USC student was found dead in a residence near campus, and investigators were looking into the possibility that he overdosed.

The young man, whose identity had not yet been released, was declared dead at 2:25 p.m. yesterday, said Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner assistant chief Ed Winter.

“It was reported as a possible overdose,” he said.

About the same time, officers responded to the death investigation call in the 600 block of West 30th Street in the University Park area, said Los Angeles Police Department Officer Liliana Preciado.

A USC spokesman acknowledged the death but had no details.

Preciado said police believe the man was about 23 years old. Winter said he was a man in his 20s. At least one news report connected him to a USC fraternity.

Coroners investigators will determine the cause of death following an autopsy and toxicology testing, the latter of which could take months to complete.
