Lisa Love

Long Beach State made women's volleyball history this year by winning the NCAA title and going undefeated. Just a few miles up the Harbor Freeway, USC's Lisa Love made women's volleyball history of another sort: Troy's longtime coach (and associate athletic director) quietly recorded her 400th career win, including over 200 wins at USC. Love conquers all? Not exactly, but with a career winning percentage over .700, she's come pretty damn close. (David Davis)

John C. Reilly

In Terrence Malick's war epic The Thin Red Line there's a scene that is so real, so down to earth, that it comes as a shock amid so much metaphysical jabber: A soldier with a face out of Bill Malden's sketchbook tells another that he no longer feels anything for the dead and the dying. “I don't feel nothin',” says the man, eyes narrowing. The soldier is the aptly named Storm and the actor who plays him is John C. Reilly, one of the great secrets of American film. (Manohla Dargis)
