As part of L.A Fleet Week, culinary specialists from U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and the Coast Guard will arm themselves with spatulas and the hottest grills on the San Pedro waterfront and compete in a Galley Wars “surf & turf” grilling competition at 1:30 p.m.

Princess Cruises sponsors the culinary competition, and returning for his third year as judge, Celebrity Chef Robert Irvine will join a panel of judges. Back as the competition host is The Love Boat‘s Jill Whelan, who will oversee service members preparing their culinary creations. Teams will be required to use ingredients that are “standard issue” in military kitchens. Each team will be tasked with making their best version of a “surf & turf” meat and seafood entrée, two sides and a dessert.

Monday, September 2

Yardbird at The Beverly Center is offering brunch from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Labor Day.  Sip on mimosas and Bellini’s or something from the juice bar. Also on the menu: stacks of blueberry pie pancakes made with fresh local berries and brown sugar Florentine, chicken ‘n’ watermelon ‘n’ waffles served with honey hot sauce and bourbon maple syrup.

Tuesday, September 3

Mixt is popping up every Tuesday through September 24 at the Silver Lake Farmers market leading up to its Frogtown opening at the end of month. The eco-friendly salad chain will be offering pre-packaged salads and free totes for shoppers, introducing locals to the new neighborhood outpost.

Marina del Rey Hotel pool party

The Sunday Boat House pool party at the Marina del Rey Hotel featuring DJs and poolside Labor Day menus from SALT Restaurant & Bar takes place from noon to 6 p.m. Open to the public and the perfect spot to cool down, the party’s  $10 for non-hotel guests.

Saturday, September 14

Just around the corner, tickets are available now for the 10th anniversary of  Alexs’s Lemonade food festival, hosted by James Beard Foundation award-winners Chef Suzanne Goin and partner Caroline Styne, together with  chef David Lentz, is set for UCLA’s Royce Quad from 12:30 to 4:30  p.m.

Returning chefs Michael Cimarusti, Chris Bianco, Adam Perry Lang, Donald Link, Nancy Oakes, Nancy Silverton, Jon Shook, Vinny Dotolo, Rocco Whalen and Marc Vetri will come together to cook for childhood cancer cures. First-time participant is Mexico City chef Gabriela Cámara of  Contramar and Cala in San Francisco,  who will open her first restaurant in Santa Monica in the coming months.
