Updated and corrected again: The victim was shot in the butt, as originally reported. Headline has been changed back to an original version. First posted at 12:02 a.m.

Gunfire erupted at Plummer Park in West Hollywood overnight, a sheriff's official confirmed to the Weekly.

Details were not immediately available but Twitter reports from Weho Daily suggested at least one person was injured: Paramedics were seen at the scene. Twitter users said they heard a man say, “help,” and “I've been shot … in my ass.”

And one aural witness, Jacey Duprie reported via Twitter that she heard this:

sirens are coming and people are screaming “help” “oh my god!”

A deputy at the sheriff's West Hollywood station confirmed that a shooting had taken place at the park near Fuller Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard on the east side of the city, but she told us the watch commander was too busy working on the case to give more details.

Another aural witness, Bryan Holdman, tweeted that he heard this:

He also stated:

Whoa! Someone just shot at Plummer Park. Very clearly hearing someone scream, “I've been shot!”

Weho Daily said at least one victim was hit and that the LAPD was assisting deputies in a search for a suspect or suspects.

Reports of gunfire and deputies immediately detaining people at the scene at Plummer Park apparently started hitting Twitter shortly after 11 p.m.

[Update at 12:37 a.m.]: Sheriff's Sgt. Dave Valentine told the Weekly that three victims were targeted but that no one was hit. It's unclear what sparked the attack, and the gunman was on the loose, he said.

One of the victims was indeed taken to a hospital for injuries unrelated to the gunfire, he said.

He was working on getting us more details.

The gunfire was reported at 11:35 p.m., Valentine said.

[Update at 1:29 p.m.]: Valentine now says the person who was injured was shot. He was hit in the abdomen and was in emergency surgery early today, he said.

He was “alert and awake” before he went into surgery, he said.

[Update at 12:20 p.m.]: Everything old is new again. Looks like the first reports that the victim was shot in his butt turned out to be true.

Sgt. Chris Tatar today told the Weekly that this was indeed the case, lending credibility to Twitter reports (above) relaying what users heard near the scene.

The sheriff's department today released a press statement saying that a deputy was on patrol in the park when gunfire broke out and that three “male transients” ran towards the officer:

The men told the deputy an unidentified, heavy-set, male … adult fired several rounds from a handgun at them, striking one of them in the lower torso.

Motive was still unclear. The victim was said to be in serious condition.
