Conductor Gustavo Dudamel is at the helm again in an evening that culminates with Modest Mussorgsky's multilayered piano workout Picture of an Exhibition. The Russian composer quickly put the suite together after the death of a friend, the artist Viktor Hartmann. Its separate movements were each devised as homages to Hartmann's paintings, and Dudamel and the band are likely to wring unexpected colors and tonal variations from the 1874 composition. Dudamel, in turn, pays tribute to his predecessor conductor at L.A. Phil by opening the program with Esa-Pekka Salonen's Helix, followed by Sergei Rachmaninoff's Isle of the Dead.
