It's been a bad few weeks for Phillipe the Original, the much-loved Los Angeles restaurant famous for its French dip sandwiches. At the end of January, Phillipe's longtime owner, William Binder, died at the age of 94. And on Wednesday, the restaurant was shut down by the L.A. County Public Health Department due to a cockroach infestation. Inspectors visited Phillipe's after receiving customer complaints, and shut down the restaurant for a mandatory 48 hours. When we called the restaurant this morning, we were told that the inspectors had returned this morning and given them “a clean bill of health.” Phillipe's will reopen at 10:30 a.m.

Phillipe the Original has been operating for more than 100 years. The restaurant moved to its current location on North Alameda Street in 1951. The French Dip sandwich was created at Philippe's back in 1918 by founder Philippe Mathieu.
