Food & Wine magazine announced restaurant editor Kate Krader's five selections for Restaurant of the Year 2015, and Ludo Lefebvre's Petit Trois is among them. Petit Trois opened last July and serves as the French chef's tiny ode to the bars of Paris.

The restaurant is next door to Lefebvre's Trois Mec, which like Petit Trois is co-owned by Animal chefs Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo. Unlike the $100-per-person tasting menu and nearly un-navigable online reservation system of Trois Mec, however, Petit Trois takes no reservations, seats patrons mostly on stools and serves a thoughtful à la carte menu of typical French bar food. (A decadent steaklike burger was recently added to the menu.

Of Petit Trois' offerings, Krader had this to say: “Lefebvre takes unremarkable French dishes like steak frites and makes them superstars — from confited chicken legs with brioche-crumb butter to a melty Boursin-stuffed omelet that even Justin Timberlake has Instagrammed.”

This is the first year Food & Wine is doing a Restaurant of the Year award; according to the magazine's description, it reflects the most exciting new openings of the previous 12 months. Petit Trois is the only Southern California restaurant to make the small inaugural list. The other four winners are Mexico City chef Enrique Olvera's Cosme in New York City, Gavin Kaysen's Spoon and Stable in Minneapolis, Bronx-born Mashama Bailey's The Grey in Savannah, Georgia, and Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski's The Progress in San Francisco.

Earlier this year, Bestia's Ori Menashe was among the magazine's 10 Best New Chefs of 2015, a high honor that has launched many careers.
