Driver Dead after Fatal Collision on Highway 201

TULARE, CA (April 20, 2022) – A head-on crash on Road 144 claimed the life of a DUI driver and injured Pete Castillo Thursday evening.

At approximately 4:56 p.m., officers and medical crews arrived in the area of the accident on Road 144 north of State Route 201.

As per reports, a 2007 Honda was heading south on Road 144, just north of State Route 201 at the time. The vehicle was driven by an unidentified 41-year-old male.

For reasons unknown, the 2007 Honda driver crossed the median lines directly into the path of Castillo. As a result, the wrong-way driver collided head-on with a northbound 2001 Honda, driven by 67-year-old Castillo.

Paramedics arrived and sent both drivers to Kaweah Health Medical Center for further treatment. However, due to his extremely serious injuries, the driver was later pronounced dead by the medical staff.

Meanwhile, Castillo sustained moderate injuries, but the current extent of his injuries is unknown.

Both directions of the roadway were temporarily shutdown to allow for cleanup and preliminary duties. At this time, an active investigation is still currently ongoing.
