Paul Anthony Ciancia shot a TSA agent yesterday, headed up an LAX escalator, but then came back down to fire more rounds at the victim, federal authorities said today.

Andre Birotte, Jr., the U.S. Attorney in Los Angeles, said the 23-year-old from southern New Jersey could face a capital case, with charges of murder of a federal agent and commission of violence at an airport being filed.

Authorities identified the TSA agent at the foot of the escalator as Gerardo Hernandez, a 39-year-old with a wife and two children. He was the only fatality in the 9:20 a.m. attack yesterday at LAX that wounded two other TSA agents and sent at least two others to hospitals.

The FBI agent in charge of the bureau's Los Angeles office said Ciancia, who had recently lived in Los Feliz, was unresponsive and unable to answer questions as he recovered in a hospital.

He was shot by LAX cops yesterday who rushed toward the sound of gunfire in Terminal 3.

Authorities said he had a Smith & Wesson MP-15 rifle, five magazines of ammo and a note expressing hatred toward the TSA.

The agent said the suspect had been dropped off at the airport. Who dropped him off? If authorities know they aren't saying.
