Liberals can breathe a little easier knowing that the conservative Tea Party's recent launch in Beverly Hills over the weekend is being led by Pat Boone, the singer whose political views are only slightly more sane than those of Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

This is man, after all, who has denounced evolution and defended Mel Gibson's antisemitic rant following his arrest on suspicion of DUI in Malibu.

So you can rest assured that, although this effort to bring back America's corporate-friendly taxes and big-bank-allied regulations is billed as a grass-roots groundswell, it's bankrolled by billionaires and represented by mouthpieces like Pat Boone.

Boone led the Beverly Hills Tea Party's coming out Sunday afternoon at Beverly Gardens Park, saying, “I feel like the Tea Party is about people speaking their beliefs without fear of recrimination … You don't have to accept everything they say. You can even debate what they say.”

We'd rather debate what people do. Pat Boone made his early career covering black music, including rock 'n' roll and gospel. It's too bad he's spending his golden years leading a group that is about as rock 'n' roll as J. Edgar Hoover.
