She champions the use of eco-friendly materials like vegetable-tanned leather and natural dyes, creating a seamless fusion of tradition with sustainability.
This harmonious blend manifests in practical applications throughout her mentoring at SCAD. “We can draw from the past to create the future,” she explains. “Traditional methods, such as our zero-waste pattern cutting and natural dyeing techniques, demonstrate to students that heritage craftsmanship often holds the key to sustainable innovation.” Shah’s philosophy resonates with many emerging designers who seek purpose and authenticity in their work.

Each assignment challenges them to consider the full lifecycle of their creations, from sourcing to eventual disposal.
“I want the students to understand that as designers, they hold power to influence change,” Sloka Bharat Shah says. “By making choices that prioritize sustainability, they contribute to a future where fashion accessories support, rather than deplete, the world around us.”
Under Sloka Bharat Shah’s guidance, the workshop has introduced innovative methods for reusing materials while encouraging student collaboration through a “sharing is caring” policy. These initiatives promote sustainability and foster a mindful approach to design, ensuring resources are utilized thoughtfully and responsibly.
