Students, faculty and staff of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena on Monday were mourning the death of a teacher who was fatally shot over the weekend at a Persian New Year's party.

Authorities say Norman Schureman, 50, was shot to death some time before 11:15 p.m. Saturday in the 31000 block of Kentfield Court in Westlake Village. Sheriff's deputies arrested 46-year-old Steven Honma in connection with the homicide.

The Los Angeles Times reported that a suspect whose wife had been insulted left the party and returned with a knife and two guns, eventually opening fire on Schureman.

Honma lived near the party host, the Times reported. When the suspect returned and displayed a knife, party-goers tackled him before he opened fire and Schureman was hit, authorities allege.

The teacher of visual communication and dynamic sketching was a second-generation instructor at the school. His father, Bob Schureman, taught classes there too.

A student of the younger Schureman blogged: “Real chill and practical guy. Sad for his family. Especially his kids. A huge loss for everyone at Art Center indeed.”

Art Center president Lorne M. Buchman wrote on the school's site Sunday that “Norman was a beloved instructor, colleague, mentor and friend of hundreds of Art Center students, faculty, staff and alumni. Norm's relationship with Art Center began almost 40 years ago when his father, Bob Schureman, taught classes in the ID department and Norm would tag along as a young curious creative. Years later … he returned to the College to teach at Art Center Europe and then Pasadena. Both Norm and Bob have inspired hundreds of design students over the years.”
