When it comes to fiendish rock bands, L.A. just doesn't make 'em like we used to. Kommunity FK was one of the creepiest and coolest goth bands in the early '80s and throughout the '90s, and though its biggest hit was 1991's “Something Inside Me Has Died,” the band itself has shown it never will.
After reuniting a few times over the past decades, the band (with leader Patrick Mata) is back again after another long hiatus to headline a fetish/bondage ball with fashion show, art, DJs Michael Stewart and Eve O and more bands (Texylvania, Former Humans, Psycho Charger). It's all going down Friday at the Vex, an El Sereno venue as historic as Kommunity FK itself.

Plexi and its “sister” band, Campfire Girls (composed of all guys), play even darker and more decadent rock & roll. Both born in the grimy clubs of Los Angeles, the groups had a similarly foreboding quality, though the former's style was more experimental, the latter's more garage. Many of these bandmates grew up, cleaned up and put away the guyliner. But thankfully they didn't put away their gear. Both acts — along with another '90s fave, Lifter — reunite Monday at the Dragonfly at a benefit to help the children of recently departed scene supporter Denise Franco.
