You wouldn’t know it by the weather, but summer is here! And one of the best things about the warmer months is the opportunity to party without confinement. Free outdoor gatherings and concerts abound, especially in downtown L.A., where Grand Performances features a particularly eclectic mix of events.

The word “eclectic” truly conveys The Gaslamp Killer Experience, debuting the series at California Plaza on Friday. Los Angeles–based DJ and producer The Gaslamp Killer, best known for breaking out of the Low End Theory club scene with demented dubstep and underground hip-hop jams (not to mention his spazzed-out antics behind the decks), took his cosmic grooves to new heights at this year’s Coachella, debuting his “Experience,” featuring a 10-piece band.

In truth, we found the curly-headed crazyman’s psych/alien/hippie mix kind of a mess at the fest. But it was sort of a beautiful mess too, especially during manic moments when it gelled. While it remains to be seen if the group has honed its sound since then, we can guarantee it will be a wild and wicked party.
