DJ Adam 12's weekly Thursday night dance club, which celebrates hip-hop, classics and breaks from 1979 to 1999, is always an anything-can-happen experience, with a stellar lineup of DJs (both announced and un-) popping in each week.
Despite venue changes (sometimes going upscale; other times, downright dive-y) and a few hiatuses along the way, the party continues to attract the best on the decks, from the late DJ AM to Jazzy Jeff to Kid Capri. Quite organically, the long-running hap also started showcasing live MCs, most of them legendary (Black Sheep, KRS ONE, Doug E. Fresh).
DJ Adam 12 may be best known as half of the dark dance duo She Wants Revenge — or maybe as Barack Obama's DJ. But what he's done for hip-hop in L.A. deserves attention, too: He has helped to expose rap's powerful origins in a club environment, before pop production and bravado outshone its heart and soul.
With AFEX LIVE at the Roxy, 12 and partner Eddie Donaldson take it all to the next level, presenting a nonstop, old-school hip-hop extravaganza with turntable and live performances by AMG, B-Real (Cypress Hill), Divine Styler, DJ Lethal (House of Pain), DJ Revolution, J-RO (Tha Alkaholics), Justin Warfield, King Tee, Large Professor (Main Source), Mr. Choc (Beat Junkies), Ras Kass, Slaine and Volume 10, plus surprises on top of that.
Of special note: 12's other half in She Wants Revenge, Warfield, returns to the stage with lyrical flows (old and new) after giving up rap 20 years ago to explore other genres.
