If you know that David Thomas is the legendary singer of Cleveland's art-punk icons Pere Ubu (and Rocket From the Tombs), then you probably know the band took their name from an eccentric, spiral-bellied character by French protosurrealist Alfred Jarry. Jarry wrote a series of absurdist plays in the 1890s around the figure of Ubu, and now Thomas has closed the pataphysical circle with his own take on Jarry's material, Bring Me the Head of Ubu Roi. Thomas will be joining compatriots Cheetah Chrome, Mike Hudson and Bob Pfeifer for the Cleveland Confidential Book Tour at the Grammy Museum, where he will be presenting his version of the Ubu saga. So, is Ubu the original punk, or just a shit-obsessed asshole? “Whoever you personally think is the Bad Guy,” says Thomas, “Pere Ubu can supply the face and voice.” The Cleveland Confidential Book Tour will stop at the Grammy Museum at L.A. Live, Thurs., April 14, 7:30 p.m.
