LA band Ozomatli have stood on a lot of stages in their fourteen year career. They've faced 10,000 in Kathmandu, have been shuttled into a Palestinian refugee camp in Jordan to perform, have gigged music schools in Burma, have done the Today Show. Next Wednesday, however, they'll play to what is their most prestigious audience yet: President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

The band is slated to appear as musical performers at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's 2009 Awards Gala in Washington, D.C., and the guests of honor are the President and First Lady. The event is scheduled to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month, and the band will play after President Obama addresses the 2,000 attendees. Also scheduled to appear is singer and actor Marc Anthony (who will receive the 2009 Chair's Award).

LA Weekly traveled to Asia with Ozomatli this spring. Read the story of the band and their travails in Burma here.
