Twiistup creator Mike Macadaan once hailed L.A.'s premier tech event as a nod to the dot-com days of excess. But Macadaan sold Twiistup to an undisclosed party a few months ago, and with new management came changes. Twiistup 6 took place July 30 and 31 at the Universal Hilton and blogger AV Flox was on the scene, armed with pen, paper and a tutu. On August 1 filmmaker Werner Herzog made an appearance at Book Soup to promote Conquest of the Useless, a richly entertaining collection of his diaries from the famously harried production of his 1982 film Fitzcarraldo, the sort of epic tale of bravado filmmaking which stands the test of being told time and time again. The second installment of the New Original Works Festival 2009 took place over the weekend at the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theatre (REDCAT), and featured two vastly divergent performance pieces, one by Jennifer the Leopard, a four piece “band” of female artists and musicians.
