Erin BroadleyThere's nothing more depressing than the end of a long holiday weekend (except the hangover, of course, which is why you should try this remedy). In addition to the WTFBBQs and beach parties, we caught Flight of the Conchords at the Greek, hung out with Gary Busey at Point Break Live!, and inhaled some secondhand smoke during Cinespia's Dazed and Confused screening at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. In a perfect world we also would have cruised over to Minneapolis for Rhymesayers Entertainment's Soundset 2009 hip-hop fest, but since our Flux Capacitor and DeLorean are still in the shop, we settled on several slideshows courtesy of our sister paper, City Pages, instead.
Actor Gary Busey made a special appearance at the Dragonfly on Friday night for the May 22 performance of Point Break Live!, the wildly popular punk-rock stage adaptation of the 1991 action flick Point Break, which starred Busey as seasoned FBI agent and general badass, Angelo Pappas, opposite Keanu Reeves' Johnny Utah. Comedy greats come in two's. Abbott and Costello. Rowan and Martin. Wayland and Madame. Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement of Flight of the Conchords are not only a twosome, but they're also the “fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo” from New Zealand (the first three are so big they need not be mentioned). Last year, they performed at the Orpheum, in addition to a few small, surprise shows. Now, the duo have hit the big time, playing the Greek in front of nearly 6,000 fans.
