While our sister papers Riverfront Times and Village Voice rocked out at Pitchfork Music Festival '09 and Siren Festival '09, respectively, the L.A. Weekly opted for more intimate club and theater fare. Dios, part of our current cover story “Buddyhead Redux,” played a sold-out gig at the Troubadour on Saturday, while the same night Definitive Jux rappers Cage and Yak Ballz brought some New York flavor to the El Rey. Definitive Jux rapper Chris “Cage” Palko brought his Depart From Me tour through Los Angeles to the El Rey on July 18, along with Cardboard City cohorts Chauncey CC, F. Sean Martin and Yak Ballz. Other CC luminaries at the gig included Definitive Jux label CEO and rapper El-P and “I Never Knew You” music video director and actor Shia LaBeouf. Bigfoot Lodge West opened its doors on July 17 for locals and a few VIPs close to the project for a preview of the new Venice Boulevard location which will have its grand opening on July 22.
