Outfest, the gay and lesbian film festival in Los Angeles, announced its audience and grand jury award winners yesterday, with the films A Marine Story, BearCity, and Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt & The Magnetic Fields earning major nods.

A Marine Story, directed by Ned Farr, won for Outstanding U.S. Dramatic Feature Film, while BearCity writers Douglas Langway and Lawrence Ferber won for Outstanding Screenwriting and Strange Powers captured the award for Outstanding Documentary Film.

Outfest, one of the major gay and lesbian film festivals in the United States, wrapped two weeks of programming on Sunday. A Marine Story tackles the subject matter of the military's ban on gays and lesbians, with BearCity delving into the comical mishaps, lives, and romances of a group of male, “bear” friends. Strange Powers examines the work of musician Stephin Merritt and his band, The Magnetic Fields.
