June 7, 1999: Francisco “Paco” Stanley, host of a popular TV variety show, shot to death after leaving a restaurant in Mexico City. Six people charged, all acquitted. Case unsolved.


 


December 22, 1997: Massacre in Chiapas. As they prayed, 45 Mayan Indian men, women and children were slaughtered by a government-backed group of paramilitaries. Former National Security Adviser General Julio Cesar Santiago Diaz and at least eight former officers have been convicted and sentenced to eight years in prison.


 


July 15, 1997: Benjamin Flores Gonzalez, publisher of the newspaper La Prensa, shot to death outside his office in San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora, Mexico. The alleged killers were drug traffickers. No one has been charged.


 


September 28, 1994: Jose Francisco Ruiz Massieu, the number-two political leader of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), shot to death on a street in Mexico City. Daniel Aguilar Trevino was convicted of pulling the trigger and sentenced to 50 years in prison. Raul Salinas, brother of former President Carlos Salinas de Gotari, was found guilty of masterminding the assassination and sentenced to 50 years in prison.


 


March 23, 1994: Luis Donaldo Colosio, Mexican presidential candidate, shot to death in a Tijuana street while campaigning. Mario Aburto Martinez was convicted of premeditated murder and sentenced to 42 years in prison. Few believe he acted alone.


 


May 24, 1993: Juan Jesus Posadas, Catholic cardinal of Guadalajara, shot to death in a crossfire shootout between the Tijuana cartel and a rival drug gang at the Guadalajara airport, although many believe he was targeted. Ten San Diego street-gang members recruited by the Arellano Felix Tijuana drug cartel have been indicted.


 


February 9, 1985: Enrique “KiKi” Camarena, an agent of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, assigned to Guadalajara, Mexico, abducted by drug traffickers on February 7, 1985, and tortured until his death two days later. Mexico convicted more than two dozen people, including drug traffickers Ernesto Fonseca Carrillo and Rafael Caro Quintero, who are serving 40-year sentences. Six men have been convicted in the U.S.
