The first of January is the official New Year's Day in Japan, and the museum celebrates with day-long family activities, including storytelling by the multi-ethnic group We Tell Stories, workshops on decorating postcards and origami ornaments, and a rice cake-pounding (Mochitsuki) ceremony performed by the local Kodama Taiko troupe.
