With Joker leading the pack (11 nominations), the Academy Awards announced nominations this morning, and already the “biggest snubs” articles have flooded the web. Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers), Eddie Murphy (Dolemite Is My Name), Awkwafina (The Farewell),  and Lupita Nyong’o (Us) top the list of great performances not recognized by the academy, and the fact they are all people of color has not been lost on social media. We could argue all day about who deserved recognition and who didn’t, and clearly politics play into the choices here, but other than the obvious omissions, the noms offered few surprises. It was a great year for film, that’s for sure. Most of the titles nominated made our critics’ list of Best Movies of 2019. Read it here.

The Oscars take place Sunday, February 9 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Angelenos will want to avoid the traffic nightmare in the area, unless prepared to do the stand-all-day-for-a-glimpse-of-the-red-carpet fan thing. The show will air on ABC. And the nominees are….
