Update: The water-main break was fixed and traffic was reopened in time for the morning rush — about 6 a.m. — the DWP reports.

The eyes of the world are on L.A. Sunday night and we give them …

… a giant sinkhole. Yeah, one opened up Highland Avenue near Santa Monica Boulevard about 9 p.m., according to Weho Daily and Fox 11 News.

The L.A. Department of Transportation had to close off Highland between Santa Monica and Hollywood Boulevard, according to Fox.

You know what was happening earlier at Hollywood and Highland?

Yeah, a little thing called the Academy Awards.

City News Service indicates late Sunday that the sinkhole was caused by a water main break that would also end up leaving at least some customers without water while the Department of Water and Power tries to sort out the situation.

Critics of City Hall might say it was a fitting incident, given L.A.s budget woes. We have the second worst roads in the nation, and we wouldn't be surprised of that sinkhole started out as one of L.A.'s many potholes

On one end of Highland: The world's most coveted red carpet. A few blocks south: A sinkhole, maybe 5 or so feet wide, that would put any limo out of business.

Stay classy, L.A.
