Amy ScattergoodLast night, a crowd gathered at the Oinkster in Eagle Rock to eat even more pastrami than usual as they watched a new episode of Guy Fieri's Food Network show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Featuring, you guessed it, their favorite neighborhood “slow fast food” joint. Oinkster chef-owner Andre Guerrero hung out under the balloons as the cheering crowd watched Fieri sample the goods on television that they were eating in real life. Episode three of season eight also featured Bob's Taco Station in Rosenberg, Texas, and Narragansett, Rhode Island's Crazy Burger Cafe and Juice Bar.
Although the episode was filmed last June, it almost didn't show last night–Guerrero said that yesterday's downpour knocked out the power along that stretch of Colorado Boulevard. Oinkster stayed open anyway, operating by candlelight, and Guerrero had generators on hand to run the 2 flat screen televisions. The power went back on less than an hour before the 7 p.m. start of the show. Afterwards, Guerrero handed out little butter tarts to the crowd and told us that his Glassell Park bakery is still not open. Butter Tart is on hold as Guerrero works out a few last-minute legal issues with the landlord. So order an extra cupcake at Oinkster and be patient.
