A Los Angeles police officer who died in a motorcycle crash last week had blood-alcohol content “well over” the legal limit for driving and had been imbibing at a bar at the Los Angeles Police Academy in Elysian Park as part of longstanding “payday Wednesday” festivities at the campus, police said.

As a result, police are investigating whether 47-year-old Kenneth Aragon left the bar too drunk to drive, or whether he might have gone to another watering hole before the crash on Fletcher Drive not far from the academy, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Police said the officer, a 19-year veteran, crashed about 90 minutes after leaving the academy, opening up the question of whether he went over the limit somewhere else. Still, police have ordered bartenders at the academy to undergo “retraining.”
