With Monday's fatal shooting of postal worker Kevin Wicks by an Inglewood police officer the number of deaths this year at the hands of law enforcement in Los Angeles County has hit 27, according to the LA County Coroner.

That means roughly four deaths a month involving police officers. The startling statistic has pretty much stayed consistent since last year. In 2007, there were 61 officer-involved shooting deaths – or roughly five a month.

Some of the officer-involved-shootings this year include:

Postal employee Kevin Wicks was killed on July 21 after he answered the door of his North Hillcrest Boulevard apartment. Authorities said that Inglewood police officer Brian Ragan fired on Wicks in self-defense while investigating a family disturbance call because Wicks raised a gun at police. His death has sparked outrage among residents who learned that Ragan was involved in the shooting death of an unarmed man in May.

Ruben Ortega – a suspected gang member – was fatally shot by Inglewood police when he allegedly reached into his waistband during a foot chase on July 2.

An unarmed Michael Byoune, 19, was shot on Mother’s Day by Inglewood police officers. Since his death, Byoune’s mother and a friend who was also injured that night filed claims in June seeking $25 million. Officer Ragan and his partner are under scrutiny for the May shooting and were suspended over the incident.

Twenty-one-year-old Sergio Rojas was shot on March 12 in a confrontation with two Los Angeles anti-gang officers who were walking a foot beat near Ramona Gardens housing project. Rojas died at County-USC Medical Center later that night.

Alleged Avenues gangster Danny Leon was killed in Glassell Park on February 23 after opening fire on LAPD gang officers with a semiautomatic AK-47 rifle.

SWAT officer’s shot to death 20-year-old gunman Edgar Rivera after he took the lives of SWAT Officer Randal Simmons and three members of the gunman's family on February 6.

Glen Boldware, 47, was killed when he was shot by a police officer in an unmarked car on Sawtelle Boulevard between Olympic and Santa Monica boulevards on January 4. He was holding a cigarette lighter that looked like a small caliber pistol, according to police reports.
