An off-duty LAPD officer was shot and killed while shopping for homes in the South L.A. area of Florence-Firestone, Monday.

The shooting occurred around 9:15 p.m. in a robbery attempt that allegedly saw a three suspects come out of a black pickup truck that stopped in front of officer Fernando Uriel Arroyos—who was not in uniform—and his girlfriend.

“Today we grieve the loss of a young officer that was murdered while off duty,” LAPD said Tuesday. “As we mourn his tragic loss, we ask that you keep his family and partners in your thoughts and prayers.”

After a confrontation, shootout occurred, with Arroyos being struck by gunfire and found in critical condition by L.A. County Sheriff’s deputies that responded. Arroyos was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“Last night I responded to a Los Angeles Hospital where my Deputies helped transport an off duty Police Officer who had been shot to the hospital,” L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said Tuesday. “There is nothing more tragic and dreadful than to receive this phone call … Rest assure, our Department’s investigators are working hard to hold those responsible for this cowardly act.”

A procession took place Tuesday morning as Arroyos’ body was transported from St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood to the L.A. County Coroner’s Office.

“Our hearts break over this tragic loss for our police department and our city,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said Tuesday. “I join all of Los Angeles in grief today, and I am keeping his loved ones in my prayers.”

Three men and two women have been detained in connection with the shooting, but are being held on less the investigation continues.

Arroyos, 27, is survived by his girlfriend and parents.
