Was President Obama smoking some of that good stuff they sell legally right here in L.A. when he gave his State of the Union address Tuesday night? (He did go to college in the area). Because we're sure we heard him say that they're working on making fuel out of sun rays and water at Caltech.

Come on, Mr. President, that would be like trying to make a phonograph needle out of a peanut.

But wait, it could be true:

According to a statement this month from the Pasadena school (Obama must be on their blast list):

“Using a common metal most famously found in self-cleaning ovens, Sossina Haile hopes to change our energy future. The metal is cerium oxide–or ceria–and it is the centerpiece of a promising new technology developed by Haile and her colleagues that concentrates solar energy and uses it to efficiently convert carbon dioxide and water into fuels.”

They really are working on this. (Everybody get out of Ed Begley Jr.'s way — he wants the first water-powered Prius).

Here's what Obama said:

“At the California Institute of Technology, they're developing a way to turn sunlight and water into fuel for our cars.”

According to Caltech, the technology might someday be used to collect C02 from cars and convert into fuel, although researcher Haile says that's still a bit far off. More likely, she says, we'll (we – hah) be able to grab that C02 from coal-powered electric plants.

So Obama wasn't high. He was just high-minded.

In fact Obama wants a million electric vehicles on U.S. roads by 2015. So there you go, Ed Begley Jr.

N'way, did you see that crazy Tea Party lady's reaction to the State of the Union address? She looked like Sarah Palin with a hangover. Now that's nuts.
