Fresh juice spots are having a boom in L.A. right now, and the latest juice bar to hit the scene is The Juice in Atwater Village, which opened its doors last week.

Owned by Elizabeth Halpern and Melissa Cronkhite, The Juice is located in what used to be an optometrist's office (a fresh juice spot taking over a neighborhood optometrist's office is a pretty great symbol for the changing face of Atwater, actually). They are doing all the juicing fresh, but bottling them for quick and portable service. Juices cost $4 each.

We sampled the green apple, lemon, kale and triple ginger; the orange, grapefruit, lemon and lime; and the cucumber, grapefruit and mint. The orange and grapefruit was gratifyingly tart, and the triple ginger was a hit as well for its boldly spicy clarifying qualities. The cucumber/grapefruit/mint didn't go over as well, with a bitter and slightly medicinal flavor.

Apart from its list of 12 juice blends, you can also create a smoothie with any one of them by adding banana, almond milk, coconut milk or dates.

The Juice is open every day, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
