Driver Arrested after Fatal Pedestrian Accident near Interstate 8

EL CAJON, CA (August 8, 2022) – Wednesday evening, Darius Watts was arrested and Niurca Rios was killed after a DUI crash on Second Street.

The incident happened around 8:49 p.m., on July 27th near the 600 block of North Second Street.

According to police, a woman was standing on the sidewalk near the I-10 on-ramp, when a 2006 Hyundai Sonata struck her. The driver of the Sonata then continued driving, crashing into a traffic signal and a street sign.

Upon arrival, El Cajon officials rendered first aid to Rios and transported her to Sharp Memorial Hospital. Despite life-saving efforts, 20-year-old Rios later succumbed to her injuries.

The suspect eventually stopped on Naranca Avenue, where police later found and arrested him. Police say the vehicle had extensive front-end damage and a traffic signal hanging from it. El Cajon Police booked the driver of the Sonata, 22-year-old Watts, to San Diego County Jail for multiple charges.

In addition, the family of Niurca Rios has set up a GoFundMe to support the cost of her memorial.
