Bleached and bony was the must-have look at this year’s MTV Movie Awards (see Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie, who’ve turned themselves into The Olsen Twins), but the partiers who packed Filter mag’s viewing bash for the awards last Thursday at Cinespace obviously weren’t watching their cals or carbs. (The line for free beer and popcorn was so congested, it blocked the entrance to the screening room.) As usual, the show was a schlock-fest, but watching it at the club was oddly amusing as bloated indie-heads yelled at the screen, peaking with hoots and hollers during the Breakfast Club tribute. The aptly named Midnight Movies played afterward, but we headed for The Viper Room instead, where bar manager Tommy Black and sound dude Frankie O’Reilly were throwing their monthly in-house shindig, featuring sets by Jason Falkner, The Like and Samantha Ronson. Though Ronson — daughter of the late Mick Ronson, stepdaughter of Foreigner’s Mick Jones and sister of DJ dynamo Mark Ronson — is best known for spinning discs at celeb fetes, her funky folk rock is what scored her a deal with the decidedly un-folksy Roc-A-Fella Records. Reunited (or never apart to begin with?) love-ahs Jake Gyllenhaal and Kirsten Dunst were there, as well as Kimberley Stewart and Clea DuVall; meanwhile, members of The Donnas, Hoobastank and Maroon 5 were also hangin’ around, thanks to Charlatans U.K. front man Tim Burgess grooving the decks. But we chose to cap the eve at The Derby, where an equally cool Brit papa, Ride’s Mark Gardener, showed off his brand-new bag o’ ballads onstage. DJ Tamar Michelle (formerly of The 3 Clubs fame) booked the gig, and promises more rock-star romping (The Fraudots, featuring Beachwood Sparks’ Brent Rademaker, perform this Friday). Melrose men’s boutique Alpha touted the new fashion book Sample with an in-store signing soiree on Saturday. Sipping libations and looking haute: über-stylist Arianne Phillips, designers Louis Verdad, Grant Krajecki and Jeremy Scott (with Afro fork in his straight tresses . . . new trend?). Speaking of tresses, gothic girls rockin’ multicolored Haysi Fantayzee–esque dreads packed Heidi “Bluegirl” Calvert’s “Dark Arts Salon” at Bluespace on Hollywood Boulevard later that night, where Bauhaus’ David J offered a DJ set and showed artwork based on the Black Dahlia murder, among mutilated-Barbie creations by Kari French, creepy portraiture by Marilyn Manson and bandmate Gidget Gein, and a painted coffin by Poison’s Rikki Rocket (used to dramatic effect by burlesque vamp Amber Ray during a live striptease that included blood, glitter and a human chandelier). Death rock’s flair for the theatrical never dies, does it? From goth grottos to gay parades, Night Ranger slathered on the suncreeen and pranced with our queer/bi/transgendered pals at closing day of Gay Pride in WeHo on Sunday, chatting up Dr. Christmas, a “tree decorator” who not only rode with grand marshal Paris Hilton in the parade, but helped hook up the gig. He admitted to getting some flack, but said that this year’s event got more attention than ever before. In fact, “the only people who booed her were some butch lesbians and the religious freaks.” Haters.
