On June 28 the Ace Hotel hosted a very intimate performance by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. In addition to the performance, the Ace Hotel held a one-night-only photo exhibition titled “Nick Cave Smoking,” presented by Lethal Amounts.

When Nick Cave took the stage, an air of unpredictability filled the Theatre at Ace Hotel. The performer's live show often oscillates between pensive piano-bar moments, with Cave alone at the keys, and manic street-preacher howls as the Australian singer whips sweat and songs into the audience.

His performance Wednesday with his longtime band, the Bad Seeds, began slowly, with the melancholic ballads from 2016 album Skeleton Tree, as Cave sat at the front of the stage, illuminated by a single spotlight. From its mellow beginning, the band grew louder and more raucous as the night progressed. By the end of Cave's set, which offered songs from across his 33-year tenure with his band, including singles “Red Right Hand” and “Into My Arms,” the audience was stirred into a frenzy.

For the encore, Cave invited the audience onstage as he walked into the crowd, crooning “Stagger Lee,” “The Weeping Song” and finally “Push the Sky Away.” It was a fitting end to his set of sultry sermons: The masses who had been touched by his music had the chance to touch him back.
