So of course state officials want to shut portions of the 101 down for three early mornings — maybe more — starting at 12:01 a.m. Monday and extending through 5 a.m. Wednesday.
The good news is that the midnight-to-5 a.m. closures from Echo Park to Hollywood will usually stretch only from one exit to the next and will affect only one side of the Hollywood Freeway at a time, said Caltrans spokesman Patrick Chandler.
“The entire freeway is not being shut down,” he said. “It will happen in portions.”
The bad news is that the shutdowns, Chandler said, “might go another week.” Beyond that… “'til we're done.”
The short-length closures will happen from Glendale to Cahuenga boulevards, Caltrans said in a statement. “Motorists should expect delays and consider alternate routes,” the agency stated. “Signed detours will be in place.”
If you're a 101 commuter who's up super early to broadcast morning news on local television or do whatever horrible thing super-early risers have to do, you might want to consult Waze starting Sunday night.
Why the traffic torture? Caltrans says it's wrapping up repaving work on the freeway from downtown to Hollywood. One of the last steps is installing “loop detectors,” which “track travel time information and speeds that reflect real-time traffic conditions,” it stated.
The irony: This will benefit … Waze. In the meantime, stay strong.
