Mother's Day may already be a Hallmark holiday but that didn't stop Oprah, KFC and El Pollo Loco from turning it into a full-blown, corporate flame (grilled chicken) war over the weekend. Is nothing sacred? As Gendy Alimurung reported on Saturday, "The latest installment in our continuing coverage of the free grilled chicken wars: competitor El Pollo Loco throws itself into the fray, says it will honor the Oprah/KFC free chicken coupons on Mother's Day. KFC, on the other hand, will not honor its own coupon on Mother's Day."
After learning of this news shocker, while many Angelenos spent their Saturday completely freaking out as to what they were going to get mom for Mother's Day now that the Oprah/KFC coupons were a bust, we slept in peacefully (recovering from Thursday and Friday's Lebowski Fest), dreamt of White Russians and Iggy Pop, and saved our energy for Saturday night's big Video Game Girl burlesque event at Bordello. Read on for details about our weekend completely unrelated to chicken...
"I'm not crying, that's just Iggy Pop's sweat in my eye," joked Anthony Kiedis at the MusiCares fifth annual MAP Fund Benefit at Club Nokia on Friday May 8, which honored him with a Stevie Ray Vaughn award for his support of addicts in the music industry. Kiedis was joined by performers Iggy Pop, Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones, Bob Forrest of Thelonious Monster, plus Flea and Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers. What's better than two days of wannabe Dudes, Walters and Nihilists facing off to drink White Russians, bowl and watch the movie of all movies together? Nothing, that's what. Costumed fans of The Big Lebowski invaded the Wiltern and Cal Bowl, May 7 and 8, for Lebowski Fest 2009 and we were there to enjoy every piss-soaked-rug minute of it. Read Nicole Campos' reviews of the Day 1 movie party and Day 2 bowling party, and view a full gallery of photos in Timothy Norris' Lebowski Fest '09 slideshow.
