An up-and-coming skateboarder named Charley Ford was fatally gunned down as he sat in a car in his hometown of Compton over the weekend, authorities said.
The 24-year-old's death was quickly lamented by local skaters and friends on Facebook, who started an RIP Charley Ford page.
Here's what sheriff's officials say happened:
Deputies rushed to the 2100 block of Wilmington Ave. on Sunday at 4:34 p.m. based on reports of a shooting.
Sheriff's officials say Ford was seated in a car along with another man and a 10-month-old baby when someone ran up, opened fire, and then fled on-foot south on Wilmington.
It doesn't seem clear if Ford was the intended target, but the other two inside the vehicle weren't injured, deputies say: The department pointedly says the suspect "started shooting into the car at the victims."

Ford was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The skater's Facebook page says he went to Dominguez High School in Compton. He was said to have been a fixture at an area skatepark.
