Normally firefighters drive out into the community to save lives, but Monday no one at L.A. Fire Department Station 33 had to make a move out the door. Instead, an unidentified woman came to the South Central station and dropped off an infant daughter she'd just given birth to at home. As part of the county's Safe Surrender Program, the mother was able to leave her baby in good hands without questions being asked.

A statement issued by Supervisor Don Knabe, who got the L.A. County Board of Supervisors to fund the program in 2001, applauded “this newborn's mother for doing the right thing.” The baby girl will be cared for by the county's Children and Family Services Department until adoption is arranged.

Monday's infant surrender was the county's fifth this year and the 74th since the program began eight years ago.
