Despite the crazy cost of living here, it's an exciting time to be an Angeleno. History is being made before our eyes as the skyline evolves and Metro builds out its light-rail system. And plans to transform the very backbone of the city, the Los Angeles River, from concrete jungle to urban paradise are gaining momentum.

The nonprofit Friends of the Los Angeles River (FOLAR) today is teasing its full-length documentary, L.A. River VR Experience, with a video, below.

The video “documents the largely forgotten, concrete-encased Los Angeles River at a historic turning point, when major restoration projects are under way to bring the river back to life,” according to a FOLAR statement.

Produced by Camilla Andersson and Anders Hjemdahl of Pacific Virtual Reality, the documentary will explore 51 miles of river — from the mountains to the Pacific. It promises 360-degree video, surround sound and 3-D technology.

“By using virtual reality, we make the story of the L.A. River come alive,” Andersson says. “People’s rediscovery of the river and its current re-emergence after such a long time is a fascinating, multifaceted story.”

It's scheduled to be released in October, the month FOLAR will celebrate its 30th anniversary.
